When I was a younger actor I believed a successful audition meant the absence of anxiety, perfect confidence, and that somehow, magically, I would believe I was the fictional character. It turns out none of that is actually possible! This is why I think so many actors are plagued with self-hatred – they are attempting to do things that are impossible, so of course they fail!
My acting career completely transformed when I realized that I could actually act through my doubt and anxiety; that my brokenness, my vulnerability, was what the casting director/audience wanted to see. The real struggle with, and through, our feelings creates an illusion of character in the mind of the viewer.
